A Fight for Life in the Jawadhi Hills

A young baby was born prematurely in the rural village of Periyapanapari. A very unfortunate and heartbreaking story, as the mother who was 19 years went into labour at 7 months in the middle of the night. Sadly the mother died in labour. After which the baby was taken care by his grandmother in the village. The weight of the baby was reducing gradually as there was no opportunity to provide alternative nutrition. Seb’s Projects on hearing the condition of the baby intervene

New Balwadi Centres in the Javadi Hills

We have identified the immediate need for balwadis in the villages of Periyapannaparai and Palamarthukollai and we hope to have these two centres set up by the end of this week. The balwadi in Palamarthukollai will be inaugurated on the 22nd of July and in Periyapannaparai on the 24th of July. From the 14th to the 16th of July, we conducted a training programme for the new balwadi teachers, a group of 11 young women from all the tribal villages where Seb’s Projects works. Ove

    Metro article on leprosy

It is often thought of as a biblical disease but leprosy still affects hundreds of thousands of people worldwide every year. Metro talks to the British charities and researchers trying to halt its spread. Read the full Metro article on Leprosy. The Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust works with the Schieffelin Institute of Health, Research & Leprosy Centre and the community at Shanthigramam in Karigiri. Meena and Vitamin A

Meena is a cheerful 11-year-old girl who attended the Seb’s Tribal School in Thattankuttai until 2011, when she was taken away to labour in another state with her family. When she returned she started to go blind, and within weeks she was completely unable to distinguish shapes and see light. Seb’s Health and Development Workers, notified Seb’s staff and rushed her to the Community Health & Development Hospital in Vellore, where she was immediately referred for treatment at S

    Seb’s Stories: Chinnasamy

Chinnasamy is 55 year old man from a tiny hamlet called Karpanankollai consisting of only 3 houses. Chinnasamy’s occupation was cutting bamboo, which earned him 15,000rs per year. HEAL workers were asked to visit a sick relative of a woman in Thandayankottai. To get to Chinnasamy’s village requires over three hours of walking. On their way, the HEAL workers came across a group of thin, tired young men hauling something in a blanket. Inside the blanket was Chinnasamy with sev

    New Toilets for Shanthigramam

Thanks to the generous donations from Helen Naftalin and Stephen Brearley, we are one step closer to building new toilets for the residents at Shanthigramam. We still need to raise a further £500, and will be hosting an illustrated lecture on Leonardo DaVinci by Lydia Bauman of the National Gallery to raise the funds. UPDATE: Illuminae

Seb’s Projects India has started a new table designing project with six of the Illuminae women. The women designed beautiful mosaics for six tables and will be completing more in the coming weeks. With two tables, they can pay 1 month’s rent. Once these initial projects are finished, we will work individually with each woman to see how we can link their own personal strengths to developing a skill that will provide a sustainable income, and monitor them through all the develo
