A Fight for Life in the Jawadhi Hills

A young baby was born prematurely in the rural village of Periyapanapari. A very unfortunate and heartbreaking story, as the mother who was 19 years went into labour at 7 months in the middle of the night. Sadly the mother died in labour. After which the baby was taken care by his grandmother in the village. The weight of the baby was reducing gradually as there was no opportunity to provide alternative nutrition. Seb’s Projects on hearing the condition of the baby intervene

    Change Agent - Saraswathi

Saraswathi is our Balwadi teacher at Periya-panapari. She was a quiet, shy, soft spoken girl when she joined SEBS. Through these years she did a good job with the balwadi children in teaching as well as addressing health needs. She mobilizes the community during the mobile medical unit visits to the village. She under-stands the needs of the children and efficiently carries out all the activities of the Balwadi program. During the regular home visit she made good rapport with

Volunteer for the MBKG Pannai Orphanage Jo Pearce, June 2015

Having got the visa and booked the ticket I really didn’t know what I was letting myself in for! India hmmm, to be honest I never really fancied going there! I had travelled to different parts of the world for various charities, so this time I was destined for India. A brief conversation with James Hunter had introduced me to The Sebastian Memorial Trust. My 17 year old son wanted to join me, so he came along. We both decided we would stay for a month and if we didn’t like it

    A Bright Mind: Thavaseelan

We are overjoyed for our dear Thavaseelan, a young man from Senji mottur, whose entire college and post-graduate education (Bachelor’s Degree, Post Graduate Degree and MPhil!) was paid for by The Sebastian Hunter Trust. Thayaseelan visited our Director, Emma Koshi, with his certificate in hand and a big smile across his face! He received a First in his M. Phil! We are so proud of his incredible achievements. He is currently trying to get a teaching job in a College for which

Three new additions to the MBKG Pannai Orphanage

Kamala is 68, and is a widow with two daughters, who are both married and unwilling to care for her. Monica is three years old. She lost her father in a work related accident. Her mother could no longer manage to support Monica, and would have to leave Monica alone, without proper food and care, while she went off to work during the day. Saranya is two years old. She lost her mother a year ago, and was admitted to MBKG Pannai when her father and two older siblings could no lo

    Seb’s Stories: Chinnasamy

Chinnasamy is 55 year old man from a tiny hamlet called Karpanankollai consisting of only 3 houses. Chinnasamy’s occupation was cutting bamboo, which earned him 15,000rs per year. HEAL workers were asked to visit a sick relative of a woman in Thandayankottai. To get to Chinnasamy’s village requires over three hours of walking. On their way, the HEAL workers came across a group of thin, tired young men hauling something in a blanket. Inside the blanket was Chinnasamy with sev

Volunteer for the Sustainable Livelihoods Program: Nick Ross

“My name is Nick Ross. I worked on the Sustainable Livelihoods Program for three months in the summer of 2009/10, and returned this year (2011) to work on the HEAL program, conducting research into the relationship between perceptions of the cause of illness, and care-seeking behaviour. My relationship with Seb’s Projects has been a central part of my academic career and professional goals. Working on the SLP in 2009/10 was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life, an

    PETER ELLIS: His legacy

Born in 1926 and the youngest of three brothers, Peter was a keen sportsman and was regarded as the driving force behind Burton Hockey Club and Burton Cricket Club which he started in the 1950’s. His aim was to support and encourage sportsmanship in young people to help them develop a range of skills but in a fun way. His close friend Willie Welch said of him: “Peter had a hand in everything from ground preparation, team selection, teas, sorting the transport to matches, umpi

Reflections on Volunteering at Kasam by Julie Bettridge

“Earlier this year I spent two months at MBKG Pannai in Kassam, volunteering at the orphanage and King’s School. The experience was one I’ll never forget and I am so looking forward to getting back out there again soon. Being a volunteer, you become one of MBKG, living day-to-day with the children and staff, sharing meals together, engaging with the day students, playing games, helping with studies, generally being involved as a member of the team and living as part of the fa

Two new children at the MBKG Orphanage

The MBKG orphanage has two new additions to their family, Pavithra and Roghan. Pavithra’s mother committed suicide due to family problems leaving her six children with her illiterate husband who earns very little money. Pavithra is the youngest, at three years old and needed more care and attention. She was admitted to the nursery and goes to lower kindergarten. Roghan has a similar story. He is four years old and also attends the lower kindergarten. Roghan has already impres
