    School education in India is free and compulsory. However the cost of higher education is expensive, and educating a school child is highly challenging for tribal communities. Due to less access to middle schools they are forced to opt for boarding schools and this increases the burden to spend for boarding supplies and other needs.     Seb's students pass entrance exam for Eklavya government model school

    11 Seb's School students have qualified in the entrance exam for the Eklavya model school in Jammunamarthur of Thiruvanamallai district and will be admitted in sixth standard in June. We appreciate our teachers for their tireless efforts to prepare these students. The largest contingent of students who qualified were from Seb's school.     Education Update

    Teacher training, sports tournaments and new classrooms! Sebs school for the academic year 2016-17 started in the month of June. Six primary schools and one middle school have a total strength of 299 students. 33 students were enrolled in class I and 14 students joined middle schools.     Laxmi and Bhavani

    We are so moved and thrilled for this extraordinary girl, Bhavani (pictured left), who has managed to secure a coveted Diploma in Nursing at the Scudder Memorial Hospital.     We are overjoyed for our dear Thavaseelan, a young man from Senji mottur, whose entire college and post-graduate education (Bachelor’s Degree, Post Graduate Degree and MPhil!) was paid for by The Sebastian Hunter Trust.     New Balwadi Centres in the Javadi Hills

    We have identified the immediate need for balwadis in the villages of Periyapannaparai and Palamarthukollai and we hope to have these two centres set up by the end of this week. The balwadi in Palamarthukollai will be inaugurated on the 22nd of July and in Periyapannaparai on the 24th of July.     New Seb’s Projects Staff

    Lenin Mark has joined The Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust staff in Vellore, Tamil Nadu as Programme Officer. Lenin has a BA in Tamil and Masters in Social Work specialising in community development. Lenin previously worked as field staff on tribal community projects among the Kolli’s of Odisha. He conducts life skills workshops based on magic tricks, dancing and puppetry shows for adolescents. He plans on joining the 20 Humanitarian Clowns, an organization previously affiliat

    MBKG Pannai Orphanage and Kings School

    Six of the children who grew up at MBKG Pannai Six of the children who grew up at MBKG Pannai orphanage have recently completed their university degrees and are now employed. Many of these children were able to continue their education after King’s School thanks to the generous donations to the Higher Education Fund by their sponsors.     UPDATE: King’s School & MBKG Orphanage

    Emma Koshi and the DREAM project have started computer skill classes for 4th and 10th grade children as well as adolescent Education and Communication skills for the 14 and 15 year old children. The Junior School at King’s received twelve computers from Tharyan Koshi and were dedicated on the 22nd of August.     UPDATE: Seb’s School, Senji Mottur

    The DREAM program is now at Seb’s School, Senji Mottur, teaching English to 1st-5th standard. The program at Seb’s School also teaches farming and gardening techniques, encouraging the children to actually get out in to the field and plant. In November, Seb’s School received its first computer from Tess Data Solutions. Computer Skills sessions are now being taught to 4th and 5th standard.
